Dakota Supply Group (DSG) is committed to leading the Distribution Industry. As a part of this commitment, we seek a leader to join our executive team as the VP of Sales & Marketing (VPSM). The VPSM is responsible for providing strong leadership for Sales Management, Marketing, and Business Segment go-to-market strategies of a multi-site wholesale B2B company specializing in the Electrical, Mechanical, and Utilities distribution businesses. In this role, you would be developing long-term strategies and short-term tactical implementations to achieve the revenue and profitability objectives of the organization.


The VPSM will help our company improve its working methods and deliver a superior customer experience in alignment with our organizational priorities. A successful candidate will be a dynamic leader able to champion new and modern sales and marketing strategies. They will be strategists, change agents, partners, collaborators, and constant champions for the customer at every level of our organization.


This role requires the analysis of broad and complex issues and formulation of executable strategies to ensure that we are optimizing our sales potential with both new and existing customers. The VPSM will lead the sales function to meet revenue and gross margin financial objectives while delivering upon organizational marketing goals about sales effectiveness, efficiency, and overall customer experience. The qualified candidate will be an integral member of the executive leadership team and a key sponsor of annual strategic objectives, reporting directly to the COO. This leader must fulfill the expectation of mentoring, inspiring, and coaching individuals at all organizational levels.

A Typical Day in the Life of the VP of Sales & Marketing at DSG:

  • Own the strategic planning and execution of sales initiatives to enhance profitability, productivity, and efficiency throughout the company’s sales teams.
  • Direct and oversee the company’s sales and marketing functions to identify and develop strategies for new customers and markets for products and services.
  • Lead liaison efforts with supply chain, pricing, marketing, and branch operations to develop and execute successful sales plans.
  • Develop and implement plans to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the sales team through sales management.
  • Direct and oversee the company marketing function to identify and develop new customers for products and services.
  • Responsible for company branding, social media strategy, collateral materials, advertising, vendor sponsorships, and public relations.
  • Provide business development support, assistance with response to proposal requests, and tradeshow and conference assistance.
  • Responsible for assessing and improving the company sales compensation and commission program to align with strategic and financial objectives.
  • Ownership of vendor negotiation and rationalization strategies across multiple business segments.
  • Collaborate and influence the existing customer adoption of our eCommerce platform and new customer acquisition.
  • Develop successful customer incentive programs to increase customer loyalty and grow revenue aligned with company goals.
  • Collaborate with the executive team on developing strategic plans and initiatives with a strong emphasis on increasing market share and business segment expansion into new markets.
  • Develop and manage sales and marketing budgets and oversee the internal operating budgets.
  • Foster a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, customer focus, and service while driving individual accountability and integrity.
  • Analyze current and future trends in the distribution industry and accurately assesses functional responsibilities, competitive strengths, and vulnerabilities to maintain a competitive position.
  • Interact regularly with the executive team and individual department heads to ensure the company’s sales and marketing priorities align with the overall company direction.
  • Continually investigate and introduce process improvement measures while making decisions about enhancing value, service, effectiveness, and profitability
  • Take accountability for reaching the company’s financial targets, including but not limited to revenue, gross margin, EBITDA, and working capital metrics.
  • Create and manage a department structure, operating standards, and practices that are responsive and adaptable to evolving needs of both our internal and external customers.
  • Forecast, analyze, and report on sales and marketing activity effectiveness.
  • Set priorities, influence, and collaborate with other teams to deliver business objectives on time and within budget.
  • Use creative PR strategies to build relationships with stakeholders and media.
  • Develop a strategy for the department centered around company core values, business goals, company branding, and departmental effectiveness metrics.


A Successful VP of Sales & Marketing Typically Has:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, Marketing, Finance, or a related field
  • 7-10 Years' experience providing sales leadership; managing complex business situations; operations; product knowledge; finance.
  • Strong business acumen and experience, with the ability to provide reports and analysis of financial and sales positions to forecast, develop and implement strategic plans within the context of the larger picture.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of management, financial analysis, budgeting/forecasting, project management, and personnel management
  • Strengths in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating various activities; developing, implementing, and communicating policies and procedures for a large organization; analyzing data; making sound recommendations and adopting effective causes of action; working tactfully with all levels of the organization.
  • Previous accountability for departmental/company P&L with demonstrated experience in profitability management.
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team
  • Adaptable and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving work environment while driving toward clarity and solutions.
  • Experience in leading and building a marketing team, including remote employees.
  • Extensive experience leading the strategic vision and execution of a complete marketing function.
  • Analytical experience with the ability to extract meaningful information from data and use this to optimize decision-making.
  • A preference for working in a collaborative, cross-functional capacity as the center of the entire organization, constantly interacting with teammates, vendors, and customers.
